Let’s Work Together

How It Works

1. Consultation

Fill out the form to sign up for a free, 30 -minute virtual consultation to discuss:

  • assessment, therapy, & coaching needs

  • approaches to intervention to determine therapeutic fit

  • availability & pricing

  • answer any questions

2. Evaluation.

If your child already has a device, I will gather data on their language and social skills over 1-2 sessions. A brief report will discuss findings & recommendations.

If your child needs a device, I will gather data and trial devices and features over the course of several weeks. I will provide a detailed report with findings, recommendations, & goals.

3. Introduce AAC

Intervention begins!

The first weeks and months of intervention act as an extended device trial.

We’ll work together to make tweaks and edits to the device to make sure that the settings and vocabulary match you and your child’s needs.

4. Intervention

Individualized therapy with your child will help them learn their new device. Parent and therapist collaborate to choose activities and communication that will have the most impact, taking into account:

  • daily routines

  • child’s preferences & motivation

  • child’s learning style

  • family priorities

5. Family Training

Parents and family members who are confident with the child’s AAC device is the single greatest predictor of AAC success. Ongoing, regular parent coaching helps you empower your child during all the times the SLP is not doing therapy.

  • modeling & prompting

  • seeing progress

  • communication opportunities

6. Maintenance

It’s every therapists’ goal to work themselves out of a job.

When initial and ongoing goals of therapy have been achieved, your therapist will initiate a conversation about ending or pausing therapy.

The team can celebrate gains, discuss a plan to maintain skills, and ensure parents know they can reach back out if new skills need to be worked on.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • 1:1 services are provided in your home. Please click here for my normal service area. Social groups take place in Los Altos or Mountain View.

  • Having parents & communication partners confident with the AAC device and the strategies to teach it is one of the biggest predictors of a child's AAC success.

Parent involvement in therapy sessions and using parent coaching is an integral piece of Outside Voices' therapeutic approach. During our consultation call, I will give you more information and make sure that we are a good fit for your speech therapy needs.

  • The formal assessment and device recommendation is a pretty quick process. While it's important to pick a robust device that fits the child and family's needs, the gradual process of customizing the device, tweaking the settings, and teaching parents how to navigate the talker is the more important step of setting up an AAC device.

Therapy sessions during this time will look like (and are) intervention! But they also serve the function of making changes and adapting to how the child is responding to the new device. For example, the assessment may have determined that 60 visible icons was appropriate. The device trial may show us that it may be beneficial to hide extraneous buttons for a while.
